Wells Cathedral was the first cathedral in England to be built in the Gothic style from its foundation, with construction beginning around 1175. Its Nave is the largest single space within the Cathedral, with proportions and architecture that remain remarkably true to its medieval origins.
I photographed Theia early one morning, when the Cathedral was completely empty and the light was soft and flat beneath an overcast sky. Without strong sunlight or dramatic shadows, the architecture reveals itself in a different way. The symmetry, repetition and precise geometry become almost graphic, giving the photograph a sense of stillness and calm.
Towards the crossing, the famous Scissor Arches can be seen supporting the central tower, a remarkable piece of medieval engineering added in the 14th century.
For me, Theia is about finding beauty in that quietness: allowing the architecture to speak for itself without the distraction of people or dramatic light.
