About this piece
The Quire ceiling decoration was created by William Blake Richmond, who began work on the Quire and Apse mosaics in the 1890s. While Christopher Wren’s original interior was deliberately restrained, Richmond introduced a richer decorative scheme inspired by early Christian and Byzantine traditions, using vibrant mosaics to bring a greater sense of spiritual grandeur to the space.
Part of a wider 19th century movement to enrich the interior of St Paul’s, Richmond’s work introduced colour, symbolism, and craftsmanship into Wren’s classical architecture. Above the celebrated carved choir stalls by Grinling Gibbons, whose intricate foliage and figures contrast with the Cathedral’s geometric forms, the ceiling completes a remarkable vertical composition that draws the eye upwards towards a more celestial atmosphere.
