Ely Cathedral is a remarkable meeting of architectural eras, with its origins in the Norman period and centuries of additions, changes and restorations layered into the building. At its heart is the extraordinary Octagon Tower, created after the original Norman central tower collapsed in 1322. What began as a response to disaster became one of the great achievements of medieval engineering.
Lothlórien was photographed from one of the shutters within the Octagon when opened, allowing me to capture the full structure from an unusual perspective.
Fantasy has always influenced the way I see architecture. There are places in the real world that can feel strangely out of place, and Ely is certainly one of them. The Octagon's extraordinary architecture inspired the name Lothlórien.
The artwork is a top to bottom vertorama, bringing the full height and intricate structure of the Octagon together into a single immersive view.
