Ely Cathedral’s Norman nave stretches 75 metres beneath its remarkable 19th century painted ceiling. Installed during the Victorian restoration, the ceiling was created by two artists, Henry Styleman Le Strange and Thomas Gambier Parry, and tells the ancestry of Jesus, beginning with Adam and continuing through figures including Abraham, David and Mary.
Photographed in 2021 in the early morning, this was one of my experiments in pushing colour and light further than the camera initially captured. The soft light coming through the stained glass was subtle in person, so I worked extensively in post production to bring out the colours and atmosphere I felt within the space.
The result is a full span view of the nave, bringing together the architecture and painted ceiling into a single composition. It became an enjoyable challenge to see just how far I could push the colours while still retaining the character of the cathedral.
