It’s a rare occasion that I get to photograph churches outside of opening hours, and this was no exception. Despite how empty it appears, Bath Abbey was actually packed with visitors. During the three hours I spent there, I waited for visitors to leave their seats and photographed individual pockets of empty space as they appeared.
With over 40 hours of post production and meticulous stitching of multiple images, I combined these separate moments into a single composition, making the crowds disappear and revealing the architecture as I experienced it.
Since taking this photograph in 2018, Bath Abbey has undergone a major renovation, with many of its ornate pews removed. I’m glad I captured the space before these changes, and I look forward to seeing it with its fresh new look.
The artwork brings together the Abbey’s soaring architecture, intricate details and sense of scale from a perspective beyond a conventional photograph.
